Christian Dior NY, silk faille 'New Look' cocktail dress, dating to
the mid-1950's. For those whom aren't familiar with why in fact
there was a Dior-NY outlet, it should be known that the NY pieces were
produced in the States for a smart reason—during the era, the import taxes
were an exuberantly high percentile (about 90%), so therefore
to allow the American clientelle to be able to own the fine fashion
creations, at a non-inflated price, the house thought it best to open a
foreign branch, which was licensed and supervised to produce the original
Dior designs.
This dress is fashioned from storm-grey (more blue than grey) silk
faille, with a delicately pleated waistline which allows the the
skirt to have it's natural fullness, and a classic 'New Look'
neckline—which almost always comprised of a sweeping cut, that extended
widely across the shoulders and somewhat deeply into the neckline.
It's a classic piece, without heavy adorments or surface
embellishments, instead a fine & cleanly cut piece, that's been
tastefully decorated across one of it's main attractions—the neckline,
decorated with large silk bows.
Lined in silk organza, and fastens at the back with a zipper, and
interior petersham waistband, labelled Christian Dior / New York.
The provenance of the dress, within itself, is a sheer marvel—the wearer
will be able to know that she is in fact wearing an original 50's
Dior 'New-Look' dress!
