$1,565 / Item Ref.# 30041
As we stated in #30045's listing, for
those whom are not familiar with the lovely works of this designer, it
should be known that the Scottish-born Ronald Paterson, was a
prominent couturier during 1950-1970, with a fashion house based in the
elite district of London, whom's works are now on view and in the
collection of the Victorian & Albert Museum. The well-known couture
millinier of the period- James Wedge, worked under Paterson to produce
fine couture hats, which now are on view at a special "1960's
Fashion" exhibition at the Victorian & Albert Museum, also.
One of Patterson's most important and renown clients, was the family
of Castle Howard- one of Europes most extravagant and exceptional homes.
Our gown is from the Castle Howard costume collection, which comprised of
only the finest textiles and clothing spanning from the 18th through 20th
century. Until recently, many of the cosutme & textile articles from
the Howard collection were on view in their museum, and mostly identified by a blue tape label, for museum inventory
identification/numbering. Majestic reception gown & matching coat,
designed by Ronald Paterson of London, dating to the early 1950's—from the
Castle Howard estate! Simiarl in style to our other Paterson
ensemble, #30045 through the
regal use of decadent fabrics & merely exceptional
construction! The ensemble is fashioned from mushroom-coloured silk satin, whilst
the coat has a dramatic & vivid purple taffeta lining. I love the way
Paterson chose to use a lush colour for the lining—creating whimsical, yet
subtle drama!
The coat is constructed with dolman-style sleeves, which heavily
gather upwards on the arms, and also having beautiful, strong & bold
lines at the back neckline. When worn, the coat romanticly "rustles" from
the swishing taffeta!
The gown is cut in a most figure-flattering manner—with a tightly
fitted waistline & ingeneously shaped hips & bossom. Again, the
strong lines from the seams of the dress's bodice, are reflected in
the distinct lines of the coat—which soley act as part of the
ensemble's design! Decorated to the front of the bodice by the use of
small white pearl beads sewn in a circular pattern & sapphire-coloured
round beads within, also having iridescent pink sequins & very small
golden stud-like beads—both sewn in a swirl-like manner.
Fastens with a back zipper, and labeled Ronald Paterson / 25
Albemarle St. London. Though there is no Castle Howard tape label
present in this set, it is more than obvious that the family purchased
this set & #30045 through their
repeat taste!
Measurements: Bust 35", Waist 24".
The condition is Very Good- there are some
faint & small surface marks to the satin, most of which are very
difficult to spot, & one small pull at the shoulder strap. If we had
sent this ensemble for a cleaning prior to listing, we would have priced
it around $1,800—so we have accomidated the cleaning bill in the current
price. |
