Silk Damask & Paste Evening Gown, c.1910-15

£490 / Item Ref.# 20101

An elegant, with delcate touches of opulence, late-Edwardian evening gown. Fashioned from pale cream silk damask, which gives a soft luminosity when in light. The dress is a final representation of the closing 'opulent era', which would then fade away in near years, and fashion would soon make an approach for less grande style.

The original couturier's design inspiration must have had some ancient Greek attribution, as it's fluid-like & graceful shape is reminiscant of the 'chiton', which was a traditional Greek-garment that was drawn in at the waist, and it's material was allowed to gently fold and create it's own shape—which is undoubtedly noticeable in this exquisite example.

It's decorated along the edges with glittering paste / rhinestones, which extend down to the waist, across the overlapped bossom. Also with silver lace at the sleeve's ends, comprised of tulle with silver threads handwoven throughout to create its pattern. The lace is further accented by dispersed sprays of the rhinestones, all of which are individually hand set. Whilst the skirt's only adornment is the use of beautifully bunched & crimped 'rosettes' near the hemline, which create further dips and folds in the flowing silk.

The dress fastens with series of hooks and eyes to the front and at the waistband. Lined & boned at the bodice, skirt is unlined (it was probably lined at some point). Also, do note that the silk hanging over the mannequins foot is not un-stitched/damaged, and is meant to hang in that manner. The wearer will look as though she is a Greek goddess in this beautiful piece!

Measurements: the generously-cut bossom makes it rather difficult to know what the exact measurement is, but having slightly 'under-measured' to be safe, the bust should be no more than 36", and waist measures 26".

The condition is Very Good- there is a faint amount of underarm discolour to the lining only (not at all visible to the exterior), and only a small amount of the rhinestones are missing, whilst about two inches of the rhinestone trim is partially un-stitched. The silk is extremely clean & smooth, as well as strong without sings of weakness.
