Born Leslie Claire Margret Caron, on the 1st day of July, of the year 1931, in Boulonge-Billancourt, France. Her American mother, whom was previously a dancer, prepared Leslie for a career in preforming. She trained at the Paris Conservaotire from childhood, until she reached the age of sixteen, when she was selected to dance with the Ballet de Champs Elysses. After three years with this prestigious troupe, she was discovered by the famous Gene Kelly, whom cast her as the ingénue in his 1951 film An American in Paris. This of course, led to a long-term Metro Goldwyn Mayer contract and a string of films to follow in which Caron's dancing and singing skills were shocased to the utmost, the include Lili (1953), The Glass Slipper (1954), Gaby (1956), and a film that we associate as being her most memorable- Gigi (1958). This was only the beautiful begining, Caron worked on loan at 20th Century Fox studios and co-stared with Fred Astaire, and was then sent on the Paris stage in Jean Renoir's Ornet. As musicals slowly went out of fashion, Caron sought to alter her screen image- successfully doing
so with her portrayal of a pregnant unmarried woman awaing an abortion, in what is believed to be her most exceptionally played role in The L-Shaped Room (1962), a performance that won her the BFA award, although she had been previously nominated for a BFA, and an Oscar for her role in Lili. Caron became known as the most "stylishly-elegant" actress of the 1960's, thanks to her superb wardrobe collection- the majority designed by her well-loved Marc Bohan, and of course her renown smooth, ease-like manner and presence, which is very apparent in all of her films. She was co-starred with many of Hollywood's finest & most handsome actors- which included Cary Grant, in Father Goose (1965) where she received the utterly famous "slap-in-the-face" (playful of course!). Caron was also one of the few actresses of the 50's-60s to receive the most consecutive number of film awards. Her awards & nominations are below.
